Iran's new supreme leader has been elected days after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in US and Israeli strikes, the country's media reported. Ahmad Alamolhoda, a member of Iran's Assembly of Experts, confirmed the election of a new leader.
He said that the election of new leaders has been completed and the new supreme leader has been elected. However, he did not reveal the name of who has been selected as the new leader.
Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency said Ahmad Alamolhoda said the majority of members had reached a consensus. But there are still some processes left. The rest of the process now rests with the head of the Assembly of Experts Secretariat, Hosseini Bushehri, who is tasked with making public announcements on the issue.
The Assembly of Experts is a council of 88 Iranian religious leaders who are elected by popular vote. In the absence of a supreme leader, the council is responsible for selecting the next successor.
Earlier, Israel threatened that whoever is elected as the new supreme leader in Iran,He is the one they will target. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in an attack by the United States and Israel last Saturday.
